What Writing Teaches Me

I was driving down the winding road at golden hour. The road is nestled in-between towering trees that keep it secluded from the rest of the world and all of its surroundings. There were little trickles of golden light that were flickering through the spaces in-between the leaves. And as I observed all of this happening around me, I realized just how much writing has been teaching me.

Writing is something that intimidates a lot of people. I am incredibly intimidated by it almost every day, even though it is one of my favorite things. Even if you don’t care to be a writer, there are still so many things that writing and journaling can teach you about yourself and the world around you.

Writing shows me the importance of slowing down and observing the things that are going on around me. There are small moments that replay in my mind like short videos or snapshots; and while I’m living in that moment, I think to myself, “I could write about this.” Such as the moment I was driving down the long, winding road that leads to my new home.

Write about the things that you know. Sit down and describe, in detail, the backyard of your childhood home. Write about your best friend from second grade. Write about what you did today. And before you know it, those descriptions of the things you know could lead you to brand-new ideas and things you may have never thought of before.

Writing constantly reminds me to be present in every moment. I try to remember the sights, smells, sounds, and the feel of moments that stick out to me–moments that I think have the qualifications to be the most vivid memories. Because these memories often craft the next short story or poem or creative writing piece.

I encourage you to sit down and write this week. Even if you hate writing–especially if you hate writing. Write about something simple from your day. Write about a new food you tried and loved. Write about a song you listened to and why you loved or hated it. Start small, write about the things you know, and see where you go!
