Found Poetry

Lately, I’ve been in a rut when it comes to writing and creativity. Whenever I feel this way, I try to come up with creative ways to ignite that part of my brain. Sometimes, I even include my family and friends in this process to help me.

I call this exercise “found poetry” because it’s a poem I find deep within my heart through the words of the people I love most.

Here’s how it works:

1.) Think of your closest family and friends.

2.) Ask each of them to give you one word or short phrase that means something special to them.

3.) Use those words and phrases to write a poem or a short story in honor of the people you love.

This method always helps me come up with new poetry when I am lacking the words on my own–it stretches my mind, asking me to make the various words and phrases fit with each other in some creative way. I am going to set out on this task this week, and when I am finished, I will post the poem that results from it!

If you try this writing tip, I encourage you to share your “found poem” in the comments!

Happy Writing!
