April was National Poetry Month, so I decided to write another collaborative poem. The italicized words are the contributions of my friends and family. Enjoy!
Life is found in serendipitous moments where we slow down and
Give ourselves space to simply be--
No effort in who we wish we were,
Just freedom in who we actually are
As we abide in seemingly ordinary things.
Like the time it rained and we ate cheesecake for dinner,
Scrapbooking on the floor of my small condo.
The only light being my collection of candles,
The soft glow dancing on the walls,
Imitating stars,
Reminding me of the loveliness of rain.
Or the time I watched you flow along the
Curl of a wave
In the heat of the summer.
A smile stretched across your lips,
The sea reflecting your face,
Unafraid.
Or when were were little and we drank our body weight in
Chocolate milk.
Running through the forest,
Bare feet on mossy stone,
Because we were not yet too old for fairytales.
(Oh, I hope we never will be).
Or when you asked me about my dream afternoon,
And I answered that it consists of coffee with you
As we watch the tulips and
Daffodils and
All of my favorite spring flowers bloom.
And on this gorgeous April day,
I will give myself grace.
Because I get so caught up in the busyness and
The commotion of the everyday.
So I take pen to paper and slow my pace.
As I remind myself my life is made up of these small moments,
Tucked away in my brain,
Pocketed to take out another day.
For when I need a reminder that yes, some memories mimc melancholy, but beauty
Never fully
Hides its face.
